Remove a Watermark from a Photo

A watermark is a semi-transparent mark laid over a photo so nobody can use it without paying. Removing one from an image you have not licensed is copyright infringement, and no tool changes that. What follows is about the cases where removal is legitimate: photos you shot, stock you have already bought, and videos you posted yourself and want back without the platform logo.

Watermarks are harder to remove than ordinary text, and it is worth knowing why before you judge a result. Ordinary text sits on top of the picture and hides what is underneath. A watermark is usually blended into it, so every pixel it touches is part original photo and part mark. The AI is not filling an empty hole; it is unmixing two images that were added together. That is why a clean removal looks like nothing happened, and a bad one leaves a faint rectangular haze where the mark used to be.

The three watermark types, easiest to hardest

Corner logos and single marks. A logo in the bottom-right over sky, a wall, or blurred background. This is the easy case and it is close to always clean. The area is small and the background is smooth, so there is very little the model has to invent.

Repeated diagonal tiles. The Shutterstock, Getty, Alamy, and Adobe Stock preview pattern: one mark repeated across the whole frame at an angle. Harder, because the mark touches every part of the picture including faces and fine detail. Modern models handle it in one pass on most images. Where it fails is high-frequency detail such as hair, foliage, and printed text, where the unmixing leaves a soft patch.

Platform video watermarks. TikTok, CapCut, and similar logos that move around the frame between frames. On a still exported from the video this is just a corner logo. On the video itself you need a video tool; this page is for images.

Removing a watermark from your own stock purchase

The common honest case: you licensed an image, then found you had only saved the watermarked preview and the original download link expired. Removing the preview mark from the copy you own a licence to is fine. Upload the largest version you have, mark the watermark region, export.

The result will not be pixel-identical to the clean original, and for print work that matters. For web use at normal viewing size it is usually indistinguishable. If the shot is going on a billboard, re-download from the stock library instead.

Removing the TikTok logo from your own video export

You made the video, you own it, and you want the frame without the bouncing logo before putting it somewhere else. Export the still, mark the logo, remove it. Because the logo moves, some frames put it over a face or a busy area, so pick a frame where it sits over something simple if you have the choice.

Worth saying plainly: platforms put those marks there on purpose, and reposting someone else's clip with the mark scrubbed off is the thing the mark exists to prevent. This is for your own footage.

What makes a removal look obviously edited

Four tells, in the order people notice them:

• A rectangular haze. The removed area has slightly different contrast from its surroundings. Caused by marking a region much larger than the actual mark. Mark tight.
• Broken texture. Brick courses that do not line up, hair that goes soft in one patch, a grid that skips. The model reconstructed texture it could not infer. Nothing to do but crop or accept it.
• Colour drift. The patch reads slightly warmer or cooler. Most common on gradients like a sky at sunset, where the model matches local colour rather than the gradient.
• A ghost of the original mark. Faint but visible at full zoom. Happens with dark, high-opacity marks over light backgrounds. A second pass over the residue usually clears it.

Practical tips

Work from the biggest file you have. More surrounding pixels means the model has more to infer from. Removing a mark from a 4000px image then downscaling beats removing it from an 800px one.

Do not mark a generous margin. With ordinary object removal, extra margin helps. With watermarks it hurts, because you are asking the model to rebuild clean picture that did not need rebuilding.

Split overlapping marks. A stock preview with both a diagonal tile and a corner logo comes out better in two passes than one.

Check at 100%. Watermark residue is invisible at fit-to-screen and obvious at full size.

How this compares to the alternatives

vs. Photoshop Content-Aware Fill and the Healing Brush. Photoshop is still better on a single difficult image where you can spend twenty minutes. It is much slower on a repeated diagonal pattern, because you are healing the same mark forty times.

vs. cropping it out. Frequently the right answer. If the mark sits in a corner and you can lose that corner, crop. It is instant and there is nothing to detect.

vs. dedicated watermark-removal sites. Comparable engines on the easy cases. The difference here is that removal is one step in an editor, so you can clean the mark, then remove leftover text, then replace the background without moving the file between tools.

Where it will not help

• Content you do not own. We do not process obvious infringement, and the honest answer is that a watermark on someone else's work is doing its job.
• Invisible or forensic watermarks. Some stock and AI-generated images carry marks encoded in the pixel data rather than drawn on top. Removing a visible logo does not touch those.
• Marks over the eyes or mouth of a face. The model will invent a plausible face. It will not be the right face.
• Video files. Stills only here.
